What is sober living?
Sober living homes provide a safe, clean, and supportive environment that encourages sobriety separate from clinical services.
The core services of a sober living home include building a strong sense of community among peers in recovery and providing safe housing away from triggers and temptations. The level of accountability is an important program feature when considering a sober living home. These levels range from peer-run environments relying on mutual support to homes with trained staff that provide a more structured program. Bartholomew County is home to options that represent a variety of care levels.
What are the levels of care?
The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) provides helpful definitions on levels of care so that consumers can select the best environment for their unique recovery needs.
Level 1
These residences rely on peer support and self-governance. Residents are expected to be actively involved in their recovery and participate in house meetings and decision-making processes.
Level 2
These residences still value peer and community support. A house manager or other staff member typically oversees operations and monitors rules and expectations.
Level 3
These residences are often called “supervised housing” and provide the highest level of structure with trained staff and a guided recovery program.
Level 4
These residences offer clinical addiction treatment, peer-based recovery support, and life skills development.
Recovery Housing Checklist
This resource offers a list of things you should look for to ensure you choose the best sober living home for you.
1) Consider Location
Is the sober living home close to your place of employment or potential employment?
Is the neighborhood safe?
Enough parking for all the residents?
Close to public transportation?
3) Consider Costs

Transportation
Meal Preparation
Employment assistance and requirements
Payment requirements and refund policy
2) Consider the Environment
What is the experience of staff?
Is the facility clean and safe?
What are the house rules and policies?
What are the supports and requirements for meetings both in and out of house?
4) Consider Program Structure & Accountability
Is there 24/7 available support?
Are there on-site managers?
What is the curfew and guest policies?
Are overnight passes allowed?
Is there a minimum length of time commitment to complete the program?
What is your relapse protocol?
5) DMHA Certification
The Department of Mental Health Administration also known as DMHA provides certification that guarantees a sober living home adheres to high standards of quality, safety, and ethics, increasing your chances of successful recovery through evidence- based practices and a supportive environment. This certification also offers peace of mind by ensuring the home is accountable to state oversight and committed to your well-being. DMHA certification is not a requirement to operate a sober living home.
