Indianapolis, IN – Last month, Indiana Medicaid Director Cora Steinmetz presented key findings from an independent evaluation of the state's Substance Use Disorder (SUD) 1115 waiver to the Commission to Combat Substance Use Disorder. This waiver, approved in 2018, has significantly expanded access to high-quality addiction treatment for Hoosier Medicaid members with the goal of reducing overdose deaths.

The evaluation highlighted the substantial progress Indiana has made in addressing SUD:

  • Increased access to care: A 20% rise in beneficiaries receiving monthly SUD services demonstrates the waiver's success in connecting individuals with necessary treatment.

  • Reduced strain on emergency departments: Fewer SUD-related emergency department visits indicate that individuals are receiving more effective preventative and ongoing care.

  • Expanded network of providers: More SUD providers now accept Medicaid, ensuring greater choice and accessibility for individuals seeking treatment.

  • Lower overdose fatality rates: A decrease in overdose deaths among beneficiaries underscores the program's positive impact on saving lives.

These achievements are a testament to Indiana's commitment to combating substance use disorder through innovative approaches and expanded treatment access. The SUD 1115 waiver is a critical component of the state's #NextLevelRecovery initiative, aimed at improving the health and well-being of Hoosiers struggling with addiction.
